Hooked On Prayer - A New Ministry

The story of the Hooked On Prayer Ministry is a journey that began in May 1997, when two women had just graduated from the Women’s Leadership Institute at the Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. Looking for ways to “scatter seeds,” who could have guessed that the gift of a shawl to one whose heart was broken would start a chain reaction felt around the world. Some of life’s most meaningful movements have the simplest beginnings. And so it was with this ministry. It happened because this particular shawl and all that followed were genuine gifts of love. Spiraling out from the Divine Love, who first knit us into being, this creative endeavor replicates acts of loving kindness from that source of love within. Through prayer and meditation, the original knit-three/purl-three prayer shawl pattern was created. The pattern is a variation of the Seed Stitch, symbolic of “planting” our prayers, and has three (representing the Trinity) as its main number. All work begins and ends with prayer. What comes from that prayer is a shawl that is lovingly hand knit or crocheted out of soft, comforting yarn, blessed by a priest, and wrapped around the shoulders of some someone who needs the sort of comfort only the love and generosity of a caring friend can provide. The finished items become physical expressions of our  prayers, a reminder

of our love and God’s blessings. They are gifts like no other – gifts of hope, of comfort, of peace and of love.

Saint Margaret Parish is excited to announce that we will be starting a Hooked On Prayer Ministry on our campus in September. We invite anyone (skilled or unskilled) to come and share your time, talent and friendship! Our meetings will take place in the Adult Education Center Library on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am. The first meeting will be September 14th. For more information, contact Joan Keenan at 410-638-9381.

“A new command I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

From Father Mike

Dear Friends,

The number of priests and the shortage of priests – that is the topic of this column. I want to look with you at the available number of Archdiocesan priests for active ministry. This is a challenging issue. I think it is important for us to be aware of what is happening in the bigger Church of which we are part. The Archdiocese and our Catholic Church in many parts of the world is facing a crisis with regard to the number of priests.

First, some background.
Cardinal Keeler, the Archbishop of Baltimore at that time, recognized that the number of priests was decreasing. The Cardinal was concerned about how we are going to continue to provide sacramental and general ministry throughout the Archdiocese with fewer priests. In the year 1999, he appointed a committee to study this issue and make recommendations to him. The committee (Committee for the Allocation and Recruitment of Priests) was composed of approximately 25 persons – priests, permanent deacons, religious sisters, and laypersons representing all regions of the Archdiocese. This committee worked for three years and submitted its report in 2002. The report is titled The Hope That Lies Before Us. Part One of the report consists of 29 recommendations for fostering vocations to the priesthood, e.g. each priest and parish seeing this as a responsibility, opening a house of discernment for college-age young men who just want to explore the possibility of priesthood, etc. Part Two of the report consists of 19 recommendations for distributing available priests throughout the Archdiocese (nine counties and Baltimore City). This part of The Hope That Lies Before Us also contains recommendations for providing ministry in parishes that would not have a resident priest.

The CARA organization (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate) did a foundational study for the above report. CARA is a professional research firm located in Washington, D.C. The Archdiocese commissioned CARA to look at Archdiocesan data on the numbers of priests in recent decades, to take the year 1999 as a benchmark, and to forecast the likely number of priests through the year 2015. The Committee for the Allocation and Recruitment of Priests depended on this data as the basis for its recommendations.

CARA made two key assumptions in developing its forecasts.

CARA made two key assumptions in developing its forecasts.
First, it assumed that priests would retire at age 70. Fortunately, this assumption has not been totally accurate because many priests are working in fulltime ministry beyond that age. These priests have made a major positive difference and we will see this when looking at the statistics in next week’s column. Second, CARA also assumed that there would be 5 ordinations to the priesthood each year. In other words, there would be 5 new Archdiocesan priests each year to offset retirements, deaths, and withdrawals from ministry for various reasons. Unfortunately, this assumption has also not been accurate. From the year 2000 to 2010, there has been an average of only 3.2 ordinations to the priesthood each year. For example, this year, the only newly ordained priest for the Archdiocese was Father Gregory Rapisarda of our own Saint Margaret Parish.

Next week I will pick up here and
share specific statistics which will show the significant, if not serious, challenge facing the Archdiocese. share specific statistics which will show the significant, if not serious, challenge facing the Archdiocese. By the way, the Archdiocese of Baltimore is not alone in this. Practically all dioceses in our country and dioceses in many other countries are confronted with the same decline and shortage in the number of priests.

I Said a Prayer for You Today

I said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard
I felt the answer in my heart
Although He spoke no word.
I didn’t ask for wealth or fame
I know you wouldn’t mind,
I asked Him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind.
I asked that He’d be near you
At the start of each new day
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way.
I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small
But it was for His loving care
I prayed the most of all!

Parenting Pointers

“When they failed to find Jesus, Mary and Joseph went back to J e r u s a l e m looking for him everywhere.” (Luke 2:45) Have you ever lost your child - actually or figuratively? After the panic or grief, often there are parental recriminations (I should have been more attentive; I should have monitored his tech use more closely...) Like the mother in “The Runaway Bunny,” never stop seeking to connect, even when your children are grown.
